Happy 224th Birthday US Constitution!
(Palm City) Local Criminal Defense Attorney Arthur Brandt seemed to be at home in front of Ms. Kelly Coleman’s American History class at Hidden Oaks Middle School Thursday (9/22). Brandt and other local lawyers volunteered to participate in Martin County classrooms to celebrate the 224th Birthday of the US Constitution. The students were challenged by Arthur Brandt to describe the Bill of Rights and what makes our Federal Government different. “I was impressed with how familiar the students were with the US Constitution” said Brandt.

There was a pop-quiz involved in Arthur Brandt’s forty-seven minute curriculum. The students were allowed to form discussion groups to consider an actual legal case and the constitutionality of the law on which it was based. The case was about a state forcing convicted DUI drivers to have a permanent DUI license plate on their vehicle. Most of the students argued the law to be unconstitutional. “It’s great to see our next generation realize how important our US Constitution is in everyday life”, said Attorney Brandt, “They passed with flying colors”.
Friday morning (9/23) the scene shifted to Felix A. Williams Elementary where newly appointed Circuit Court Judge Mark Klingensmith joined Criminal Defense Attorney Arthur Brandt on stage in the school’s cafeteria. Both men fielded questions and answers from combined classes of fifth graders. The students with the correct responses received a copy of the US Constitution from Judge Mark Klingensmith.

The Distinguished Citizen Award is named in honor of Circuit Court Judge David Harper who served for thirty-eight years as a jurist in Martin County. Harper was the longest serving Judge in Martin County history. Judge Harper began his career as a small claims judge in 1971 before serving as a Martin County Court Judge until his death, in March of 2009. Judge Harper was very supportive of the local Boys Scouts Sailfish Council and a volunteer firefighter. Arthur Brandt who chaired the Award committee felt the choice of Nicholas Palczer was a good one due to the fact that Judge Harper worked tirelessly with the youth of Martin County in Scouting. The Award is given to a Martin County resident who completes service work through their occupation or volunteerism, demonstrates a significant and continuous dedication to the community and disciplines him or her self to live within the laws of the country.
